More Belize!  [ 2021 ]  :  [ 2015 ]

Belize 2019

I took a solo trip down south to the beautiful country of Belize this October and had a wonderful time relaxing on Caye Caulker. This is my fourth time visiting, but my first time staying in one place. I have some friends that live there, so I just relaxed for 10 days and soaked up this little bit of paradise. I ate delicious food of lobster, conch ceviche, curry shrimp, BBQ pork, plantain chips, street tacos and burritos. I went snorkeling a few times and got to see all the colorful fish, manatees, stingrays and nurse sharks. There are no private vehicles here, only golf carts and bikes as the main mode of transportation. This is a small "island" less than 5 miles long and has about 2,000 residents. Caye Caulker actually sits on top of a cave and is divided into 2 parts. The north Caye is slowly being developed and I didn't visit it this time. I stayed on the main caye and spent my days riding around with my GoPro, taking pics, checking out the merchants and exploring the back street food vendors. I ate the best tacos from a woman whose cart was right outside from where I was staying. I also got to eat one of the best breakfast burritos from a group of ladies that served out of a little window just off the main street. I did not focus on getting a tan as it seemed unnecessary since it's hoodie season here at home. But I did come home with legs full of mosquito and sand fly bites and also some eczema. Belize has the best hot sauce and golden rum, so I made sure to fill my suitcase with those. I can't recommend visiting Belize enough as the entire country is filled with adventure and each place is a bit different. But bring your appetite as you can indulge to your hearts content without feeling guilty as all their food is made with simple ingredients in right sized portions that leave you feeling happy and not heavy. The speak English there to tourists, but Creole to each other. You can bring your American dollars here and exchange with vendors as needed. The exchange rate is 2:1, so your American dollars goes twice as far here. I just love this place and I want to visit again soon. I really want to come back for a writing retreat and possibly consider having a business there. Who knows, but this place is quite the backpackers paradise!

I enjoyed watching these birds constantly kicking each other off these posts as they wait for the fishermen to toss out fish and food scraps into the sea.

  • Go slow!

    Go slow!

That is the official slogan for Caye Caulker. It rained a few times while I was there, so I most definitely had to go slow to avoid the puddles.

    The Split

This is a fun place to hang out between the 2 parts of Caye Caulker. There is a bar called the Lazy Lizard and plenty of places to sunbathe. This spot has gone through major renovations through out the years. It is now all cleared out from a huge, unfinished and too heavy cement hotel that once occupied most of it.

There are lots of dogs that call Caye Caulker home. This one is at the split watching his owner drink a beer.
